FAQs

Wicks Wood Floors, Inc.

  • Why should you choose hardwood floors for your space?

Hardwood floors are an excellent choice for their safety, cleanliness, and low maintenance requirements. They're not only beautiful but also add significant value to your home. With proper care, hardwood flooring can last for generations, making it a long-term investment in your property.
  • Should you go with site-finished or factory-finished hardwood flooring?

At Wicks Wood Floors, we specialize in site-finished hardwood flooring, which offers the most customization options. We install raw wood and sand it on-site, allowing you to select a custom stain of your choice. Factory-finished floors, on the other hand, come with pre-applied stain and finish, enabling immediate use after installation.
  • Is solid hardwood or engineered flooring the better choice for your needs?

Solid wood flooring is made from a single piece of wood and can be refinished multiple times, lasting over 100 years. Engineered flooring consists of several substrate layers topped with a solid wood veneer. Modern engineered floors are available in prefinished or site-finished options, with some types allowing for future refinishing depending on the thickness of the wood veneer.
  • What causes cracks between hardwood floorboards, and how can they be prevented?

It's normal for hardwood floors to experience some expansion and contraction due to seasonal changes and humidity levels. During heating seasons, low humidity can cause boards to shrink, creating visible spaces. These gaps, which can be up to a dime's thickness, are more noticeable in light-colored woods. They typically close as humidity increases. We recommend using a humidifier to minimize these changes.
  • Why do wood floors fade over time, and what can be done to protect them?

Excessive direct sunlight exposure through windows can cause fading or discoloration of wood floors, similar to its effect on carpets or furniture. To protect your floors, we suggest using drapes or blinds during periods of intense sunlight.
  • Are hardwood floors a good option for homes with pets?

Contrary to popular belief, you can have both pets and wood floors. Regular trimming of your pet's claws and proper floor maintenance will ensure your hardwood wears well. We use the highest grade of residential finish in the industry. Additionally, hardwood floors can make your home cleaner as pet hair doesn't get trapped and is easy to clean up.
  • What is the typical life expectancy of a hardwood floor?

With proper care, hardwood flooring can last a lifetime. Unlike other home components that need frequent replacement, your wood floor will endure, potentially outlasting your mortgage. It can be sanded approximately 7 times, with 15-20 years between each sanding. Moreover, hardwood floors increase your home's value, making them a wise long-term investment.
  • Can individual boards be replaced or repaired if damaged?

Our team at Wicks Wood Floors can replace pet-stained or water-damaged boards in your existing hardwood floor. After replacing the affected boards, we sand the area to ensure uniform flatness and mix a custom stain to match your existing flooring seamlessly.
  • How does wood flooring compare to other flooring products in terms of durability and style?

Wood flooring offers superior warmth compared to other materials, being 7 times warmer than tile and twice as warm as linoleum. It's generally less expensive than tile and comparable in price to high-quality laminate or carpet. An additional benefit is that hardwood flooring increases your home's value, making it a smart investment choice.
