Floor Care & Maintenance
At Wicks Wood Floors, Inc, we want your hardwood floors to look beautiful for decades. With the right care, hardwood is one of the most durable and timeless flooring choices you can make. While today’s finishes are advanced and virtually maintenance-free, simple routines and preventative steps will keep your floors in top condition.

Everyday Cleaning Tips
Regular cleaning helps protect your investment by preventing dirt, grit, and spills from causing damage.
- Clean your floors once every 1–2 weeks with a dust mop, microfiber mop, or vacuum (hardwood-safe setting)
- Wipe up wet spills promptly with a soft cotton cloth
- Never damp mop hardwood floors — excess water can damage wood
- Avoid wax, oil soap, vinegar, or household cleaners — they can dull finishes and make future recoating difficult
- Use a professional hardwood cleaner such as Bona® products, which we recommend to all our customers
Preventative Maintenance
Small steps make a big difference in protecting your floors:
- Place mats or throw rugs at entryways and in high-traffic areas
- Avoid rubber-backed rugs — they can trap moisture and damage finishes
- Use felt furniture pads under chair and table legs; never slide heavy furniture across the floor
- Avoid walking on hardwood with high heels or cleats, which can dent the surface
- Keep your pet’s claws trimmed to prevent scratches
- Use a humidifier in winter to maintain proper indoor humidity and prevent seasonal gaps or cracking
- Protect floors from direct sunlight with curtains or UV-protective window film to reduce fading
Pro Tip: Wicks Wood Floors recommends recoating your wood floors every 2–3 years (or sooner if wear is visible). A recoat restores resilience and sheen before a full refinish is necessary.
Newly Finished Floors
If you’ve just had your floors refinished or installed, follow these guidelines to protect the new finish while it cures:
- Wait 4–6 hours before walking on floors in socks
- After 24 hours, you may walk in soft-soled shoes
- Wait 48 hours before moving furniture back in — always lift and use felt protectors
- Avoid placing pets on the floor for 48 hours
- Place area rugs after 7 days to allow the finish to fully cure
- Avoid cleaning the floors with liquid cleaners for the first 7 days
